As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, one of my goals is to make treatment as effective and personalized as possible. One tool that can help with this is GeneSight testing — a type of genetic test that provides insight into how your body may respond to certain psychiatric medications.

💡 What it is:

GeneSight testing analyzes specific genes related to how your body metabolizes and processes medications. It doesn’t diagnose mental illness, but it can offer helpful guidance on which medications may work best for you based on your genetic makeup.

💊 Why it matters:

For some patients, finding the right medication for depression, anxiety, ADHD, or other mental health conditions can involve trial and error. GeneSight testing can sometimes reduce that process by identifying medications that are more likely — or less likely — to be effective or well-tolerated.

👩‍⚕️ How it works:

It’s a simple cheek swab done in the office or at home. The results are reviewed by your provider, who uses them alongside your clinical history, symptoms, and experiences to guide medication decisions.

⚖️ What to keep in mind:

While GeneSight can be a valuable tool, it’s not a guarantee or a magic answer. Medication management is still individualized, and your provider will consider many factors beyond genetics when creating your treatment plan.

Personalized care means using every resource we can to support your healing — and GeneSight testing is one more step toward making mental health treatment truly patient-centered. 💚
